How to Install a Limestone Veneer Wall
.Prepare the wall to accept the limestone veneer. If the existing wall is bare concrete or brick, then you are ready to go. If the existing wall is painted masonry, drywall, plaster or you are not sure what it is made out of, then attach wire lath to the wall. Use appropriate anchors and fasteners for the type wall you to which you are connecting. For instance, a brick wall will need concrete fasteners, where as a dry wall will need course screws, driven into the wall studs. Use a stud finder to mark the wall before attaching the lath. Fasteners should be placed every six inches. Use wire snips to custom cut the lath to fit the wall.
.Apply a coat of mortar to the wall, approximately 1/2-inch thick with a trowel. If lath is on the wall, make certain the lath is completely covered. Allow to set for about two hours or until the wall is firm, but still mildly pliable. Add horizontal lines with a scratcher tool. Allow to fully dry.
.Clean the limestone pieces of loose dirt and debris with clear water, as needed.
.Smear a coating of mortar to the back of a limestone piece, 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch thick. Press firmly against the wall, hold in place until the mortar grabs; about 30 seconds. Start at the top of the wall and work down. Cut limestone pieces with a wet saw as needed. Install the limestone close together, keeping a narrow grout line. Limestone can be installed with no grout line, if possible. If you want to add a consistent grout line, use spacers available at home improvement stores.
.Fill a grout bag with grout mixed to the manufacturer's specifications. Press grout to one corner of the bag. Snip an approximately 5/8-inch opening in the corner of the bag. If the grout line is very narrow, cut a smaller opening; however, if the grout is thick, it may not flow if the opening is too small. Squeeze grout to fill any gaps between the limestone pieces, as needed.
